When first seeing a Cairns Birdwing butterfly I was struck by its colour. Not knowing its name I temporarily called it “the opal butterfly”. I love the way they “stall” in flight from time to time, and just drift. I chose to paint it this way because I wanted to capture the movement.
(The lady who bought this painting really loves it. The painting attracted her because it is so cheerful, and now that it hangs in her lounge room she says the whole room has taken on that feeling.)
